UCLA CFAR CORES
Norman Cousins Program in Psychoneuroimmunology
PNI is the field that investigates the bidirectional relationships between the mind/brain and immune system. The program, founded in 1984, provides research funds for innovative psychoneuroimmunologic work at UCLA as well as training for pre- and post-doctoral fellows. Research projects investigate the physiological linkages between the brain and the immune system and the impact of psychological factors on immune processes and disease. The program is unique, in its focus on clinical disease and the psychoneuroimmunologic mechanisms that may impact disease processes, including AIDS. Critical questions about these relationships are addressed from the molecular to the clinical levels. A significant number of the core faculty members are AIDS investigators.
